Beginning Residential Design Course

Four Week Intensive Course

Cost: $2,000.00

Spring Session:  Feb. 25 - March 19, 2008
Fall Session: Sept. 15 - Oct. 8, 2008

Spring Session:   Feb. 23 - March 18, 2009
Fall Session: Sept. 14 - Oct. 7, 2009

Design Assignment

Typical urban garden 1000 - 2500 sq. ft.

Aims and objectives: Students will complete the above project, preselected by the School, using the following skills:

Students will be able to survey a small site using running dimensions and triangulation making note of site details such as the position of trees, buildings, simple level changes, and services, etc. They will be able to evaluate the data collected on site and produce a scale drawing at 1/8 or 1/4 inch scale to accurately portray the site’s characteristics. Working with a simple client brief students will produce a sketch proposal based on that brief .

Students will apply pattern analysis concepts which have been taught concurrently during the course. The proposal will be drawn using pencil and then technical pens, on architectural blanks using the title blocks to display appropriate information. Students will demonstrate an understanding of spatial concepts, design philosophy and a reasonable knowledge of landscape graphical symbols.

Students will produce section/elevation drawings to help illustrate the project, both for contractor and client, as well as a display board to help convey their ideas.

Field trips to conduct the Site Survey and to visit a commercial rock/brick yard are required as scheduled within the course.

Project Assignment #1

Students will prepare a herbarium for evaluation. Enrolled students will receive the required forms and instructions upon enrollment and payment of the Course deposit being received by the School.

Advanced Residential Design Course

Prerequisite - None, although it is strongly recommended that codes presented in the Beginning Residential Design Course, or their equivalent, be taken prior to the Advanced Residential Design Course.

Fall Session: Oct. 19 - Nov. 18, 2009

Design Assignment

Students will produce full plans, specifications and detail drawings for an entire site.  The assignment will include:

Students will prepare a colored rendering of their plan, including cross section and one perspective view, for presentation to the client.  One additional set of blueprints will be presented to the client at the end of the presentation.
